Silverstream Health Centre has Sonia Eder, Nurse Practitioner and Janice Young, Pharmacist available to help you out with your long-term health conditions.

Sonia works as a Nurse Practitioner to provide health services to support you to maximize your health outcomes.Nurse Practitioner qualification involves a postgraduate clinical Masters degree following an undergraduate nursing degree. They are accountable under the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act. They are qualified with Nursing Council with the same legal abilities as a doctor to prescribe, diagnose, and refer as a doctor. Sonia’s background includes an expertise in long term conditions and the LTC/Pharmacist clinic is an opportunity to clarify any questions you may in regard to your health, opportunities to review medications, and plan for future care to avoid risks.

This months’ focus is gout. 

Did you know… gout is caused by too much uric acid in the body which turns to crystals in your joints causing pain.

Did you know…. what you eat and drink only accounts for 20% of your uric acid production? Did you know….. 80% of high uric acid is caused by your body not removing uric acid properly – this can be from multiple other factors some of which you may not even have control over.

Did you know …. if you have uncontrolled gout your risk for kidney disease and permanent joint damage can increase? Kidneys are important for many different body functions including removing toxins and waste from our body.

The good news is there is treatment available for gout.

1. Uric acid medicine Common uric acid medicines are allopurinol and probenecid. Febuxostat and benzbromarone are other uric acid medicines. You need to take uric acid medicine every day even if you are having a gout attack.
